Reverend Father José Antonio Medina Camarena
September 15, 1951 – May 6, 2012

Father Tony Medina was born in Tepic, Nayarit, Mexico, the youngest of the five children of Benjamin and Francisca Medina. He was ordained a priest on August 14, 1982, in Guadalajara, Mexico, for the Misioneros de Guadalupe.

After ordination, Father Medina was missioned to Hong Kong, where he served until 1989.

Father Medina’s service in the Diocese of San Jose included assignments as Parochial Vicar at Saint Athanasius Parish in Mountain View, Saint Martin Parish, Sunnyvale, Saint John Vianney Parish in San Jose, Saint Thomas Aquinas Parish, Palo Alto, and Saint Patrick Proto-Cathedral Parish in San Jose. He also served as Chaplain at Presentation Center. From 1998 until 1999, he was a member of the Faculty at Saint Patrick’s Seminary in Menlo Park. In 2005, Father Medina was incardinated as a priest of the Diocese of San Jose.

In 2008, Father Medina was assigned as Pastor of Saint Martin Parish in Sunnyvale, an office he held until January 31, 2012, when he resigned for reasons of health.

During his time in the Diocese of San Jose, Father Medina earned a Masters Degree in Counseling Psychology from Santa Clara University and was often an instructor at the Spanish-language track of the Diocese’s Institute for Leadership in Ministry, as well as his work in Cursillo and Pastoral Hispana.

Father Medina is survived by his brothers, Benjamin and Silverio, his sisters, Margarita and Rosa Maria, nephews and nieces and many wonderful friends.

Viewing of the body will begin at 12:00 noon, on Tuesday, May 8, at Saint Martin Parish, 590 Central Avenue, Sunnyvale, where a Vigil will be celebrated on Tuesday evening at 7:00 pm. A concelebrated Funeral Mass will be on Wednesday, May 9, at 10:00 am, at the same church. Internment will be in Mexico. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made toward Saint Martin Parish Building Fund.
